One wouldn't typically associate the sport of surfing with Canada's identity as a snowy winter paradise, but then again, there's nothing typical about Tofino. This is Canada's undisputed surf capital, where a temperate marine climate (and by this, we mean no snow) reigns! Surfing is the thing to do (or to watch) in Tofino, where waves break year-round against a spectacular natural backdrop of wide, sandy beaches and temperate rainforest - and there are a variety of waves and beaches for every skill level, from the novice to the seasoned surfer. With competitions such as Queen of the Peak, O'Neill's Coldwater Classic and the Rip Curl Pro gracing our shores, it's no question Tofino has become a surf vacation destination.

The Wickaninnish Inn's ideal location on beautiful Chesterman Beach offers the best vantage point for watching Tofino surfers from your guest room or table at The Pointe Restaurant.
Tofino Surfing Lessons

Ask our Clefs d'Or Concierge team to arrange a Tofino surf lesson on your behalf with professional instructors. If the surfing lesson seems a little too involved, we can get you a wetsuit and a boogie board to ride a few easy waves with a friend - either way, you will have something to talk about back home.

Other Tofino surf spots to visit during your stay with us are nearby Cox Bay, as well as Long Beach and Wickaninnish Beach, the latter two located within the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

Cold Water

Because the temperature of our Pacific Ocean waters ranges from approximately 7 to 15° Celsius (that's 44 to 59° F), this is home to coldwater surfing, where Tofino surfers always wear a neoprene wetsuit (varying its thickness according to season), as well as gloves, booties and the optional hood. Getting in and out of your wetsuit, like the pros, is just part of the fun - and the Tofino surfing experience!
