Tofino Local Profile: Samantha Fyleris
A two-night vacation in Tofino. That’s all it took to convince Samantha Fyleris to move to Vancouver Island’s rugged West Coast. “You can’t help but stay young living in Tofino,” she says.
After she first visited in 2003, Sam knew she wanted to work at the Wickaninnish Inn, and kept an eye out for employment opportunities here. Finally, in 2006, Sam was offered a position as a guest service representative and it took very little convincing to have her partner Flo move with her to Tofino, sight unseen.
It was as great an opportunity for the Inn as it was for Sam. After all, before joining the Inn, Sam had earned the impressive designation of Junior Clefs d’Or Concierge while working at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. And prior to that, she’d worked at properties in her hometown of Montreal, where she also studied public relations management at McGill University. Once at the Inn, Sam quickly advanced to work alongside Managing Director Charles McDiarmid as the marketing co-ordinator until 2012. During this time, Sam and Flo started a family, adding two little girls to the list of beloved Wick kids.
Sam now works as the media and marketing co-ordinator for Tourism Tofino, where she continues to use her concierge skills to do what she loves: connecting local outfitters with members of the media to get Tofino’s stories told to the world. When she is not working, Sam can be found with her young daughters building sandcastles on Chesterman Beach and staying “young at heart.”
And she’s never forgotten her appreciation for the Inn. After all, she says, “The Inn continues to be such a special bucket list destination for so many.” That, and it has the power to convince a young woman to move half a world away and change her life forever.
