Fall on the West Coast brings with it a renewed appreciation for Canada’s distinctive seasons. Here, the transition is felt in subtle but remarkable ways – the migration of birds, the deepening shifts in the forest, and the richness that arrives with cooler days. September and October offer chanterelles before the first frost, while cynamoka berries dot the landscape. Clear mornings bring the rare beauty of moonset and sunrise meeting the horizon together, and the surf begins to rise with the change of season. It is a time that reminds us of the special character of this region, and of how deeply the natural rhythms shape life on this coast.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region designation, one of only 19 in Canada, and a recognition of the region’s commitment to conservation, culture, and community. The milestone will be celebrated on September 20 with a regional gathering in Tofino, hosted by the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust and ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations), featuring cultural sharing, storytelling, workshops, and a community meal. The celebration will honour Indigenous knowledge and leadership while reflecting on 25 years of collaborative conservation and sustainable development. We are grateful to support the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust through a four-year financial commitment, recognizing their unique role as both a community foundation and a UNESCO biosphere that brings together local collaboration and a global presence to foster shared understanding.

The work of the Biosphere Trust is a reminder of what makes this place so extraordinary. Towering old-growth forests meet the open Pacific, mountains tumble to the sea, and vast ecosystems reveal themselves in every direction. However you choose to explore the region, whether it’s paddling to Meares Island, hiking among ancient trees, surfing the autumn swells, birdwatching, or joining a guided tour, you will find countless ways to connect more deeply with this coast. We look forward to welcoming you to the Inn for a cozy fall visit shaped by the character of this coast.

With fall greetings from Tofino,

Charles
