Relais & Chateaux

Founded in France in 1954, Relais & Châteaux represents the highest benchmark in hotel accommodations and fine dining, with a select group of over 450 privately owned hotels and restaurants worldwide. The concept grew from the vacationing traditions of well-heeled French society, who traveled to a variety of "relais" (lodges) and "châteaux" (castles) which, while different in architecture, scenery and cuisine, presented consistently high standards.

The essence of Relais & Châteaux lies in its "5 C's": charm, courtesy, character, cuisine, and calm. The association refers to its members as disciples of simplicity, repeating simple gestures and drawing on individual secrets to enrich guests' lives during their stay. The mission statement of Relais & Châteaux is "to further the cultural and economic stature of our unique hotels and restaurants throughout the world by collectively promoting our members while recognizing their diversity, spirit and heritage".

Every year, a select few properties are invited to join. The Wickaninnish Inn is proud to have been called upon for association in 1997, in just its second year of operation.

La Route de Bonheur

La Route du Bonheur (the road to happiness) described the journey between various luxury accommodations, and we're pleased to invite you to experience our own Western Canadian adaptation through our Discover the Faces of Western Canada's Relais & Châteaux promotion .

In Western Canada, the tradition of la Route du Bonheur– or the road to happiness – lives on, miles from its French roots of vacationing between manors, villas, and châteaux, but always in the traveling spirit of Relais & Châteaux. Experience the rich character, charm, and culinary excellence of our partners as you navigate between each distinctive property and its own enchanting setting.

Start your journey on the remote, rugged west coast of Vancouver Island at eclectic Tofino, where the Wickaninnish Inn's hand-carved cedar structures stands elegantly above the dramatic surf of the Pacific Ocean.

A seaplane flight or leisurely ferry across the Georgia Straight will lead you to Vancouver's cosmopolitan city centre, where the Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, your home away from home, is perfectly located among the gardens and waterfalls of fashionable Robson Square.

Return to an era of grace and simplicity with a getaway to Hastings House Country House Hotel on Salt Spring Island near Victoria.

A skip, hop and jump whisks you to the waters of BC's Inside Passage and Sonora Resort's unique, private lodges set in a live diaporama of nature's wonders.

Venture just past the border of the province of Alberta, and amidst the snow-capped peaks of Banff National Park, you will find the Post Hotel. Perched at 1500 metres in the breath-taking Canadian Rockies, this cherished Alpine chalet is renowned for its fine dining and an award winning wine cellar of over 30,500 bottles.

Relais & Châteaux offers you the opportunity to explore our Western Canadian Route du Bonheur whether at one, two or all of our member properties: west to east or east to west - the choice is yours in discovering these special places and the unique experiences they offer, because any direction on this journey leads you to the road to happiness.
