Students at Tofino/Ucluelet High School Receive $23,000
(Tofino, BC) With the unflagging support of many local businesses, the 11th annual Wickaninnish Inn Pro-Am Golf Tournament, held September 7th, 2012, raised over $23,000.00 for the athletic and arts programs at the region’s high school, Ucluelet Secondary School.
Golf pros from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and Whistler paired up with members from the various clubs and, along with eager locals, played two rounds at the nine-hole Long Beach Golf Course. This year’s winning pro was Aaron Grice from Gorge Vale Golf Course.
Keith ‘Gibby’ Gibson, the 2008 PGA Pro of the Year and manager of the Long Beach Golf Course, was once again an integral part of this year’s success. Two Tofino restaurant teams from The Wildside Bar & Grille and Shelter along with the Inn’s culinary brigade made sure there were savoury eats and sumptuous beverages on and off the course throughout the day.
Generous donations from Peller Estates, Turning Point Brewery, Granville Island Brewery and Vancouver Island Brewery made sure all golfers were “well-hydrated” on the sunny fall day in Tofino.
Mike Rhodes, Vice-Principal and Coach from Ucluelet Secondary School says “It’s difficult to fully thank the community members and businesses who contribute to and participate in such a fantastic event without sounding repetitive year after year, but I guess that’s part of the point – it has been year after year.”
For the last 11 years, Charles McDiarmid and his team of world class hoteliers have sponsored the fall tournament. In total, the Annual Wickaninnish Inn Pro-Am Golf Tournament has raised $110,000 for the educators at Ucluelet Secondary School to use for their teams.
Rhodes goes on to say, “It is a welcome relief to be able to focus on my athletes and the upcoming season instead of worrying whether we’ll be able to travel to the next tournament.”
A year-round destination, the Wickaninnish Inn has guaranteed itself a place on the world stage, but finds it has strong roots tying it to the Tofino and Ucluelet communities.
