Since its inception in 1954, Relais & Châteaux has blossomed to include 580 properties in 6 countries. It has grown as a not-for-profit organization, operating under principles deeply rooted in shared values and an evolved vision for hospitality.

Well before the idea of working sustainably hit the masses, Relais & Châteaux members have been devoted to preserving and protecting the world’s cuisines, diverse cultures, and incredible environments. Hospitality must operate in harmony with the natural world, and these shared guiding principles are ones we cherish and continuously work to uphold here at the Wickaninnish Inn as well.

In November 2014, Relais & Châteaux made a pledge to UNESCO to preserve and continue to revive the timeless traditions of cuisine and hospitality, and the contributions we have made as a group to happiness, fellowship, and the art de vivre. This pledge included 20 key commitments with practical implications for preserving the planet.

This year, Relais & Châteaux has released its first sustainability report to share the successes, challenges, and ambitious new goals being set for all of the properties. Along with this report comes a set of 15 clearly defined objectives, each falling under one of three pillars: social and societal empowerment, environmental conservation, and sustainable cuisine. These objectives, spanning responsible purchasing to local activism, were chosen alongside two sustainability consultancies, Solinnen and Alice Audouin Consulting. They represent the full spectrum of challenges faced by the Relais & Châteaux members and the unique nature of our businesses.

The commitment to sustainable hospitality is a practice in lifelong learning, one that embraces innovation and adaptability as we examine our systems through a different lens. While none of us are perfect and there are always improvements to be made, a clear roadmap holds us accountable for these changes and the direction we are headed next. Alongside the other incredible Relais & Châteaux properties across the globe, we are looking forward to finding new ways to move the needle on these key objectives while continuing to offer an exquisite guest experience for all our wonderful guests.
