Inn & Around the Wick August 2014
In the swing: September 5 marks the annual Wickaninnish Inn Pro Am Golf Tournament at the scenic Long Beach Golf Course (www.longbeachgolfcourse.com). Golf pros from around B.C. travel to Tofino to pair up with members of local clubs for a special fundraising competition. All proceeds go toward the Ucluelet Secondary School’s athletics program — which includes golf, of course. To date, over $160,000 has been raised for local students.
Crab Cookout: You still have time to take part in one of the most deliciously authentic West Coast experiences of the summer – the Wickaninnish Inn’s Crab Cookout. Until Aug. 29, fresh, sweet, local Dungeness crab along with salads, breads, desserts and refreshments (but no alcohol) are served right on beautiful Chesterman Beach Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Guests enjoy their meal at rustic driftwood tables, then cosy up around a campfire with all the fixings for s’mores. This experience is exclusively available to guests of the Inn; cost is $65 per person, plus tax and service. Reserve your seat by contacting The Pointe restaurant at 1-800-333-4604.
Going greener: Surrounded as it is by some of the most pristine landscape in Canada, the Inn takes its commitment to the environment seriously and is forever launching new eco-friendly initiatives. Most recently, the Inn built a staff bike shed – known as the “Organic Temple of Transportation” – replacing the composting are, the “Organic Temple of Transition” which has since been moved to a large space in the woods. This covered post and beam structure protects bikes from the elements, making it easier for employees to cycle to and from work, and to leave their cars at home.
Going even greener: The Inn recently installed a Tesla charger, encouraging owners of the sophisticated – and non-polluting – electric cars to travel to this part of the world. Small steps, to be sure, but each goes a long way toward reducing our impact on the beautiful world we live in.
