All Fore the Wildside
That’s the thing about living in a small town like Tofino…a casual conversation started in the depths of winter can build to a perfect partnership such as that between Long Beach Golf Course and the Wildside Grill.
Long Beach Golf Course is a 9 hole, challenging full length course within the boundaries of the Pacific Rim National Park and surrounded by forest. September is the perfect time of year to golf in Tofino. The course is lush, weather is fair and storms are still at bay. That being said, this course is open to be enjoyed year round. Hardy west coast golfers sport the ‘West Coast Tuxedo’ (i.e. gumboots and rain gear) to play in all weather. They may be joined on the course by resident bears or the odd wolf, and are often treated to the sound of waves rolling onto nearby Long Beach.
In the winter of 2012, Keith Gibson, Director of Operations at Long Beach Golf Course, was looking for someone to take over the daily food and beverage services as well as group functions at the onsite restaurant. “We were running out of resources to manage the course and restaurant, and needed to focus on maintaining and improving the course itself. We wanted to find a partner to focus on the food service and Wildside Grill was the perfect fit”.
Jeff Mikus, partner in the Wildside Grill and somewhat acquainted with drivers and pitching wedges, ran into Keith one day and the idea formed. Jessie Blake, Jeff’s business partner – also happy playing a round – was on board. The pair worked together to update the Course’s restaurant and bring their popular menu featuring fish tacos, oyster burgers and more to visitors of the golf course, Long Beach and Pacific Rim Park. The Wildside menu at Long Beach Golf Course has been expanded too, as a smoker was purchased and items such as smoked beef and lamb sandwiches added to the menu. A bonus: the new licensed establishment allows diners to enjoy a frosty mug of beer or glass of wine with their tasty plates.
This September 6th, the Wickaninnish Inn will be partnering with Long Beach Golf Course and Wildside Grill at the Golf Course to present our annual Pro-Am tournament. The event features a pizza night at the Inn, full day golf tournament with visiting golf pros and a silent auction and dinner at the course after a full day of swinging clubs. Proceeds from this annual event benefit Tofino and Ucluelet Secondary School students.
