A Note From Charles September 2013

We love September at the Wickaninnish Inn. The days are still sunny and warm, but at night, there’s the first hint of a chill in the air. The mood is mellow and cosy, perfect for relaxing by a fire, perhaps with a glass of wine from the Inn’s award-winning cellar.

This year, along with the first breath of autumn, there’s also big change in the air.

That’s because things have really been cooking at The Pointe Restaurant. In late Spring, The Pointe was named Vancouver Island’s best restaurant in the 2013 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. Now, following in the impressive footsteps of Chefs Rod Butters, Andrew Springett and Nicholas Nutting, The Pointe has a new culinary team in place.

Warren Barr, who has been the Inn’s Sous Chef since 2010, steps into the role of Executive Chef. Warren originally joined the Inn after stints at several renowned restaurants including Vancouver’s four diamond-rated Le Crocodile and Prince Edward Island’s Inn at Bay Fortune. For the past three years, he not only worked closely with Chef Nutting, but participated in such high profile events as the 2013 Relais & Châteaux Taste of British Columbia in New York City.

Joining him as Restaurant Chef is David Sider, who was most recently executive Sous Chef at the legendary Langdon Hall in Cambridge, Ontario. Like the Inn, Langdon Hall is one of only a handful of Relais & Chateaux properties in Canada, and is famous for its championship of local produce. David, who grew up in Ontario’s Niagara region, has also cooked at a variety of high-profile restaurants, including three of the restaurants on the illustrious San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Both chefs have a passion for local, organic and seasonal produce and are excited to be working with Vancouver Island’s exceptional ingredients. We are excited to see what they’ll be stirring up in the months ahead.

Things were also sizzling on September 6 at the 12th Annual Wickaninnish Inn Pro-Am-Golf Tournament at the Long Beach Golf Course. Every year, golf pros from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and Whistler team up with members from local clubs to raise funds for athletic programs benefiting local students. This year over $20,000 was raised!

Of course, none of this could happen without support from local businesses and the Tofino-Ucluelet community. And that’s what we love best about life at the Inn – we are part of a real community of residents, guests and all those who work at the Inn. And never does that seem more true than in the mellow, relaxed and idyllic month of September.
