Artist Profile: Suzi Beber
There's a new artist's work featured in our eye-catching jewelry case in the Beach Building lobby, Suzi Beber. As a frequent guest of the Inn, Suzi has long held an affinity for walking Chesterman Beach with her Golden Retrievers, though her path has not always been so calm & serene.
Suzi Beber spent the first part of her adult life teaching English, Visual Arts, and Special Education, being a high school department head, consultant, and vice principal, directing musical productions, and making sure that she really savoured life's "awfully big adventure," including a summer hiking in the Eastern Arctic on Baffin Island, and soloing the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. All that changed in the blink of an eye, when a routine surgery took a detour.
In the spring of 2003, Suzi and her partner, and their Golden Retrievers, moved to Victoria, where the moderate temperatures are kinder to Suzi's ongoing health issues.
When Suzi's challenges become overwhelming, she finds solace in her art.
The proceeds from all of Suzi's work are donated to The Smiling Blue Skies ® Cancer Fund, which she founded in the spring of 2001, after losing her Golden Retriever, Blues, to Lymphoma.
Suzi's artistic works are one of a kind, whether they are the size of a pendant, a hockey or baseball trading card, or a full sized mural. Each is a celebration of life and represents a precious person or pet whose life has been touched by cancer.
Each glass pendant is a miniature world, composed of layers featuring an excerpt from an original painting or photograph, archival inks, gold leaf, and hand made treeless papers, that have been hand stencilled or silk screened.
Pendants come with multi-layered, hand dyed, watercolour inspired cords, with silver closures.
Suzi is the proud recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. To learn more about Suzi and The Smiling Blue Skies ® Cancer Fund, please visit www.smilingblueskies.com
