Tofino Brewing Company

Tofino’s microbrewery was hotly anticipated when it opened its doors in April of 2011, and the traffic at their  Industrial Road location doesn’t seem to have stopped since.

A mixture of deliciously west coast brews, both year-round and seasonal, are on tap. The Inn’s The Pointe Restaurant features the Tuff Session Ale – a medium-bodied pale ale made with Pacific Northwest hops by the pint and half-pint. The Hoppin’ Cretin IPA and the Reign in Blonde are other year-round offerings, and seasonal brews this year included a summer wheat ale and a fall/winter coffee porter.

And all of this just down the road; it doesn’t get much more local!

Three Tofino locals – Bryan O’Malley, Chris Neufeld and Dave McConnell – are behind Tofino Brewing Company, and brewmaster David Woodward joined them from Whistler.
Although all but Woodward were new to the brewing business, Tofino Brewing Company has quickly become a success, with well-deserved recognition at beer festivals and high demand from restaurants as far away as Vancouver.

O’Malley, Neufeld and McConnell have found innovative ways to cut down on their energy, water consumption and waste at the brewery: “Our brewery was built on a few basic ideas: brewing great beer, being a positive addition to our town, and operating in a sustainable and locally focused manner.”

The brewery is run entirely on hydroelectric power, and spent grain is transported to a farm in Port Alberni where it is used as livestock feed. The brewery provides trub – a brewing byproduct made up of leftover hops and barley protein – to local horticulturalists, and other waste to a local composting company. Water re-use is something the Tofino Brew Co. team is also really proud of: “We recapture the water used in cooling and re-use it in the brewing process,” said Neufeld.

Tofino Brewing Co. is moving toward bottling, but they’re not there yet. Locals get their beer in reusable glass “growlers and growlitas” that are available at a small cost. It’s true, “Recycling’s never tasted so good!”
