The spring equinox has ceremoniously arrived, carrying the promise of longer, warmer days as the coast’s unruly winter storms fade. With the arrival of spring comes a renewed spirit of adventure and exploration, inviting us to immerse ourselves in nature, both on land and in the ocean. These recent spells of sunshine have inspired me to don my wetsuit and paddle out to embrace early mornings on the water once again.

For many years, the waters surrounding Tofino have nurtured incredible surf talent. We are proud to share that Tofino native Sanoa Olin recently qualified to represent Canada in the Summer Olympics. Born into a family of surfers on our rugged coastline, she received her first five-foot soft top at the age of six. At ten, Sanoa earned the ‘Princess of the Peak’ title at the Queen of the Peak competition and, by age twelve, became the youngest female surfer ever to win the Tofino Rip Curl Pro. She is a force to be reckoned with for sure, and this latest accomplishment, qualifying for the Olympics, is a testament to her dedication and the enduring legacy of surfing in Tofino.

More than just a sport, surfing is an intrinsic part of our town’s culture and is woven into the very fabric of our coastal community. Surf Sister, led by Krissy Montgomery, has played a key role in training generations of aspiring athletes and teaching women how to surf in Tofino since 1999. Above and beyond merely shaping phenomenal surfers, their initiatives, such as the popular Queen of the Peak event launched in 2010, help foster a sense of camaraderie and empowerment within the surfing community and celebrate the unwavering passion and extraordinary talent of female surfers on the West Coast.

Whether watching from the shore or inspired to dip one’s toes into the world of surfing, a visit to Tofino can be fully fulfilled with a lesson from Surf Sister or one of our other amazing surf schools. Whether you're a novice seeking the thrill of your first wave, a seasoned rider looking to refine your skills, or have a daughter who is eager to catch her first wave, this is a fantastic place to dive in.

And after a day spent catching waves, what better way to savour your triumphs than with a well-earned pint at Tofino Brewing Co? Their flagship Tuff Session Ale and the Kelp Stout are an ode to the unique flavours of the Pacific coast. For those craving a bite to eat on Chesterman Beach, our Driftwood Café welcomes you with open arms, wetsuits and all, for a nourishing meal, house-made croissant or warm drink to replenish your energy.
